- There’s more to Facebook than wall posts and Farmville. This program will show
current users of social media/networks how to use them to create a professional presence
online, network, and stay in touch with the Urban League Education Department and
BMLDI participants, faculty, Family Cluster Leaders, presenters and keynote speakers.
Not currently using social networks? No problem, you will have an opportunity to
create accounts and learning how to use them to your advantage.

- This session is designed to introduce and explain the BMLDI definition of Black male
leadership. The session focuses on the key tenants of the definition and provides the
foundation for the entire week-long training program. As a foundational session the
session sets the tone for learning through, reading, writing, listening and speaking.
10:45 - 12:15pm Session 2 - Visioning
- Faculty: Paul Spradley, Assistant Director of Student Life for Multicultural Affairs, RMU
- In this session student have the opportunity to synthesize the key learning points of the day
as they relate to African American male leadership. Through a visioning exercise students
are required to create a vision statement that describes their projected contribution to
society as a successful African American male.

2:00-3:30pm Session 3 - The Role of Culture and Media in Defining Black Males
- Faculty: Chris Moore, Black Horizon WQED & Alan Lincoln, President, Urban Media
Today and former President and CEO of WAMO
- Through the use of technology and media students are introduced to the concept of media
literacy and are presented with both positive and negative depictions of African American
men worldwide. This session is design to help students understand the importance of
becoming critical consumers of media, how the media markets and profits from
stereotypes, the power of media, and hot it is shaping how African American men and
boys are perceived.

- This session is designed to introduce participants to a set of core ethical values that are used
to frame discussions and exercises centering on basic values such as Courage,
Loyalty, Respect, Justice, Hope, Honesty and Love.

- This interactive session builds upon the values session and challenges participants to apply
core ethical values to decision making scenarios designed to test their commitments.

- The session is designed to introduce participants to the idea of developing and healthy
appreciation for difference. The session focuses on helping student connect with
intercultural situations that they may struggle with and equips them with tools to better
appreciate value of a multicultural workplace, community and society. Student will gain an
understanding that they should prepare to be citizens of the world and to prepare to be
leaders of all men regardless of race or ethnicity.

- This session is designed to help participants understand the importance of a quality
education. The session focuses identifying the benefits associated with setting high goals
and standards in the classroom. This session also emphasizes the benefits of higher
education on employment and career experiences.

- Faculty: Dr. Wayne Walters, Principal, Schenley/Obama High School
- This session focuses on the essential skills for success in high school. Key terms and
concepts are introduced to student to ensure that the high school education experienced is
maximized for the college track, trade oriented, or professional work bound student.

- Faculty: Dr. Derrick Lopez, Assistant Superintendant, Pittsburgh Public Schools
- This will introduce students to the skill of goal setting and decision-making skills. The
session will provide students with the basic principles of goal setting to enhance their
understanding of setting goals high to achieve moderate success. Each student will be
required to produce a set of goals that are both doable and measurable.

- This session/panel discussion is designed to engage participants in an interactive
discussion about what it means to be a father in a generation of single family households. It
is designed to let students talk about what they see as the role of a father in the context of a
family. The panel discussion will help participants understand more fully the consequences
of an unplanned pregnancy on the life of a child.

- This session is designed to increase awareness about the need to engage in lifestyles and
debunks some common misconceptions teens have about men’s health issues. Participants
will learn accurate facts about sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy prevention, and what
to consider in order to make healthy and wise physical, emotional, spiritual and sexual
behavioral decisions.

- Panel Members: Cheryl Doubt, Commander, Narcotic and Vice Unit, City of Pittsburgh;
Ramon C. Rustin, Director of Allegheny County Dept. of Corrections and Warden of the
Allegheny County Jail (PA). Mr. Jeff Nash, Counselor Advocate, Career Empowerment
Program, Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh; Doug Silva, Program Manager, Mon Valley
Youth Empowerment Program, Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh; Richard Garland,
Executive Director, One Vision One Life.
- This session is designed to reinforce the pitfalls associated with black male incarceration. The
session will include first hand accounts from victims of the incarceration system and
understand more fully the impact of a criminal record on their opportunities for success.

- This session is designed to help participants understand and tap into their full human
potential. The inspirational session focuses on the life story of Paulo M. Nzambi, JD, Vice
President of Administration for the Manchester Bidwell Corporation. Mr. Paulo, born in West
Africa, shares his incredible story of internationalism, education, athletics and acting. With a
focus on connecting to the “genius” in us all, this session will allow participants to contemplate
and identify the areas in their life ripe for leadership and professional development
